Education

The most powerful weapon which girls can use to change the world

We believe in the power of education and its role in creating strong women leaders. Of the over 62 million girls who are not in school globally, 34 million are adolescent girls. Research shows that basic literacy skills are lower among girls than boys. SEGEI supports girls to enroll and stay in school through mentorship, provision of school supplies and supplemental scholarships, and literacy and numeracy classes. We aim to close the economic and gender gaps in education and advance Global Goal 4: Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for [girls].

One-on-One Mentorship

SEGEI works with secondary schools and universities to match adolescent girls to local female mentors who provide guidance on navigating adolescence, academics, and career decisions. The goal of the mentorship program is to provide positive mentoring to adolescent girls aged 13-19 years while giving university women opportunities to be role models and leaders. Mentors are given an orientation prior to commencing the mentorship experience and are required to meet with their mentees at least once a month for one academic year. Mentors and mentees also participate in periodic workshops and seminars. Sign up to be a Mentor here.

Supplemental Scholarships

Many promising young women are deterred from pursuing their academic dreams and goals as a result of financial hardship. Through the SEGEI scholarship fund, we provide financial support to enable adolescent girls and young women (15-35 years) pursue undergraduate and graduate degrees in Nigeria and Kenya. By providing support for the cost of education, SEGEI will reduce financial barriers to girls’ education and empower young women to embrace and utilize their intellectual talents for a better life and stronger world.

SEGEI School Kits

Many girls in the communities we serve do not live with their biological parents and have to rely on relatives for support. These relatives often have other children and responsibilities that demand their little finances. To address the lack of educational resources for girls in these situations and to help girls thrive academically, SEGEI provides girls with school kits that include essential school supplies to help girls focus and excel in school.

Literacy and Numeracy Classes

SEGEI provides literacy and numeracy classes for out-of-school adolescent girls to ensure that they have basic reading and writing skills to engage in profitable vocational and entrepreneurial opportunities.
